With an expected pricetag of about US$3,000 body-only, the Nikon D700 is based around a Nikon FX format (36.0 x 23.9mm / 35mm frame-sized) CMOS image sensor with 12.1 effective megapixel resolution, as seen in the company’s previous Nikon D3 model. Much of the feature-set also hails from the D3, but in a body more reminiscent of the Nikon D300. That puts it squarely in competition with Canon’s EOS 5D, a 12.8 megapixel full-frame DSLR that was announced back in August 2005, and means photographers with an investment in Nikon glass who want the benefits of an FX-format sensor will now have a considerably more affordable option. 1

D700′s rugged magnesium alloy body incorporates a Nikon F bayonet mount that, as well as lenses intended for 35mm full-frame bodies, will also accommodate the company’s DX-format lenses. As with the D3, when a DX lens is attached to the Nikon D700 camera it automatically sets itself to a 1.5x crop, with a reduced 5.1 megapixel maximum resolution. Images can be framed with either the D700′s fixed eye-level pentaprism viewfinder that has 0.72x magnification, 18mm eyepoint and 95% frame coverage, or on a generous 3.0″ LCD display with 920,000 dot resolution. 2

Put more simply, handling this camera is like handling a slightly bigger D300 with a larger viewfinder and better multicontroller. Make that much better: Nikon has really nailed the usability of the multicontroller with the D3, and it’s great to see that the same component is on the D700. 3

A 12.05 million image pixel, 23.9mm x 36mm CMOS sensor designed by Nikon that is the same as the D3 and can operate in both FX Format mode and DX format mode. Nikon EXPEED technology, including 14 bits per colour analog-to-digital conversions up to the camera’s maximum frame rate and 16 bits per colour digital image processing, also carries over from the D3. Pictures shot with the D3 and D700 are expected to look the same in every respect. Well, perhaps except for dustiness: while the two cameras share the same sensor, this camera’s sensor package includes a self-cleaning component designed to vibrate away debris. 4

Nikon, Inc. today introduced the new D700 digital SLR camera featuring a 12.1-effective megapixel Nikon FX-format sensor that measures 23.9 x 36mm, which is nearly identical to the size of 35mm film. Benefiting from Nikon?s legacy of imaging technology innovation, this camera offers both advanced and professional photographers stunning image quality, accurate color reproduction and revolutionary low light performance. 5

The Nikon D700 is a new addition to Nikon’s full frame stable currently only occupied by the pro-spec D3. Sharing the same sensor and other features, is it something to take seriously or simply a camera to bulk out the product line? 6

The D700 is smaller than the D3 and a bit larger than the D300. If you add the additional battery grip, then its size is almost the same as the D3 but it still is a bit smaller and lighter. The additional size of the D700 compared to the D300 is mostly due to the larger viewfinder prism – the D700 is a full format 35mm camera whereas the D300 is a DX size camera, which incorporates also the smaller sensor. 7

The Nikon D700 appears to be a middle ground model for users that want the full frame ability of the D3, but can’t afford it. The sensor is exactly the same which is a little surprising with word of Sony developing a 24Mp full frame sensor. 8

The Nikon D700′s magnesium alloy body is sealed and feels like a rock, just like its predecessors; and a new accessory attaches to seal the connection between the camera and the new SB-900 flash. A new information display on the rear LCD augments the monochrome LCD status display on the top deck. The new display includes onscreen hot buttons similar to the Nikon D80, which allow quick access to commonly changed functions without having to find a button or delve into the menu; helpful when the camera is mounted high on a tripod. 9

Combining the best of the D300 with the excellence of the D3 is a masterstroke that’s sure to attract a lot of sales. Coming in at $2,999.99, $300 less than the Canon 5D’s initial retail price, the Nikon D700 is sure to sell well when it ships in late July. 1
